Redeveloping Flamingo in Everglades National Park
Since the devastation of hurricanes Katrina and Wilma in 2005, the Flamingo lodge has been closed and many of the services historically enjoyed by the public suspended. Flamingo has been a popular destination for anglers, boaters, birders, campers and paddlers, and the public has expressed strong support for rebuilding the area.
As Everglades National Park celebrated its 60th birthday on December 6, 2007, the park hosted a series of public meetings to discuss its Commercial Services Plan for how to redesign Flamingo. Click here to read NPCA's comments for the Flamingo Commercial Services Plan.
NPCA recognizes that the redevelopment of Flamingo will depend on many factors and challenges, including limited funding and high insurance costs. NPCA is working to ensure that the redevelopment of Flamingo will enhance the visitor experience, include “green” building technologies, and restore the natural habitats of America’s Everglades.
If done correctly, Flamingo Lodge could serve as a world-class model of sustainable design for other national parks and our south Florida communities.
